Winning At Weight-Loss-Week 1

Live Holistically is a multi-author site.
This post was written by: Pat Kennelly

Today was my weigh in… I needed a starting point, after a vacation where I let go of my healthy eating habits. Although I’ve been choosing more whole foods, drinking copious amounts of water, and eating every few hours to boost my metabolism (which means 5 0r 6 small meals a day) I’m still up a couple of pounds. Why? I sprained my ankle last week which curtailed my exercise plan. Yesterday, a long hike felt like a good start to getting back on track. The ankle is healing and I’m ready to start again on my daily exercise. Because I don’t like the scale only, I have set aside a pair of pants I would like to fit in by the end of October.

If you’re joining me please post a comment here. I’d love to know your plan.

  • Eat within one hour of waking up to boost your metabolism.
  • Every meal and snack should include protein, fat, and carbohydrate.
  • Increase your fiber for heart-health and to feel full.
  • Eat whole foods and seasonally whenever possible.
  • Choose whole grains.
  • Increase your fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid processed foods.
  • Journal your food and exercise plan.
  • Drink water. Recommended is 8-10 cups a day but this will vary with exercise level.
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. 1 hour minimum for weight loss. Every day.
  • Choose good fats.
  • Allow yourself an occasionally treat.

I had trouble finding the comment box and tried a reply. Sorry. Like your plan, plus cutting stress and having humor mentioned earlier. Scales may not be important if you are replacing fat with muscle. JC

Hi Pat, I had a big burst of intent in that direction recently. Since about January I have been donating $34 a month to the gym (NEXT door to our house). I finally cracked (motivation: a) sick of throwing money away b) October birthday coming up and reminding me that I am not 21 anymore and have to think about things like bone health and endurance c) Summer starts December 1st d) I am having a hernia op next week and if I don’t have some plan to get in shape afterwards I just won’t do it) and begged the membership people to motivate me to stay. When they offered an hour with a personal trainer I specifically asked for someone who knew the challenges of motherhood! My session was with a lovely older women who has 5 sons - so there you go. She was very helpful and I will be easing into the routine after my op. I will jump on the wagon with you then!!

one other thing! you know how I go on and on about Flylady? Well she has a book called Body Clutter that I highly recommend. I will quote from her website because it is late and am too tired to paraphrase!: “.. teach you how to adapt the basic principles of the FlyLady system and apply them to your Body Clutter, the most personal clutter of all. They do not preach at you about losing weight; they help you discover how you found it in the first place. This book teaches you how to use BabySteps and Routines to fit your own body.”

It is really good stuff.

Ok - enough from Down Under! Good night.

Great Karen! I love your comment about donating the money to the gym. This summer I have been a hiking fool and my gym membership went cold, but I do like the opportunity to go to the gym and use all of their equipment and the pool. Good luck with your operation, I hope it’s a simple procedure.
