War, Environment and the Dixie Chicks

Live Holistically is a multi-author site.
This post was written by: Gailstrail

I just watched ‘Shut Up and Sing’; a provocative and detailed account of how the Dixie Chicks and the rest of the world felt when Natalie Maines said:

“Just so you know, we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas”.

Dixie Chicks: Right or Wrong?

I knew what she meant. War kills and life is so very precious. It’s unfortunate the words Natalie Maines chose were so costly. Was the timing wrong? I don’t think so; if she had spoken these same words three years later, well, they would have been a little late. Was it the wrong place? I don’t think so; Thousands of London citizens and citizens around the world were protesting war.

I don’t believe the Dixie Chicks decided to throw a ‘sucker punch’ at President Bush while on tour in London on March 10th, 2003. I believe the Dixie Chicks were angry with President Bush for taking us to war, me too and much of the country (those not listening to country radio) felt the same way. Did she chose the wrong words?…maybe, but how many of us have spoken before we think and wished we could have said something differently?

Centuries of Wars

Centuries of wars, men with their weapons of death and destruction; and we blindly march on. I’m so tired and sick of this story. When the Dixie Chicks wrote ‘Not Ready to Make Nice‘, they may have been thinking about the fallout from that fateful day in London…however the lyrics for me have a much deeper and broader meaning.

“I’ve paid, a price and I’ll keep paying. I’m not ready to make nice, I’m not ready to back down. I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round. It’s too late to make it right, probably wouldn’t if I could. Cause I’m mad as hell and I can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should.”

World Environment

Civilization keeps ‘biting off their noses to spite their face’; poisoning our food, water and air. We keep sending people to fight and kill each other…surely, by now, civilization could find better options to solving our conflicts. You don’t have to walk out the door to understand the situation the world finds itself. You can link into the woes of the world with the click of mouse. We’re all paying the price. If you think otherwise, you’re drinking too much of the local water. You’ve been duped…and you don’t have to look too deep. Buck up! Enough is enough. Just say, ‘ no more’! There are better choices to be made. You can make it right!

Is it really to late to make it right?

Tree HuggerNO! I’m a tree hugger and proud of it. A Taoist! A Buddhist! A Christian! I love all creation; it saddens me deeply and I am ashamed that we humans (especially those we have elected to power) have done what we have done to this incredible planet. I’m mad as hell that it’s so darn hard and cost so much to do what’s right. I want wars to go away; clean water, food, air and to live in harmony, close to nature. I want to see proud and healthy people walking everywhere! I want the IRS to go away. I want a sales tax; those who can afford to buy more, pay more tax. I want the United Nations to impose a world minimum wage to go along with world trade. I want more women in power all over the world.

We so need a different level of conversation!

“Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should.”

I’m walking on my toes from ‘9 to 5’. Hoping I can make it to July 2008. I’m crossing and dotting everywhere. Trying to be at the top of my game every minute of the day. And well I should be; that’s what I’m paid to be; ‘at the top of my game’. Sometimes I feel like a turnip squeezed to the point of crumbling! Downsizing has a definite price. Retirement is on the horizon and I believe I can make it. ’Voluntary simplicity’ has its place and ‘personal downsizing’ feels like a good direction.

I can live on a third of my salary: I’m single, a woman, over 60 and can’t take time to be afraid. My life is turning a huge page. I’ll be free from ‘9 to 5’ to do it my way. FREE SPEECH is a glorious thing and my passion is plentiful! Oh, and just so you know:

“I’m not ready to make nice, I’m not ready to back down. I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round.”

I so welcome your thoughts, criticism and or any enlightenment you care to share! Please comment below.

Happy Trails!

Hear, Hear! Love the Dixie Chicks, hate what they went through just for having an opinion!

I well understand where you’re coming from Gail, and hope to hear many more of your opinions.

One bit of wisdom that I’ve learned in my life though “there will never be a change because we’re mad.” Change will only happen when we choose to love those whom it is our instinct to hate.

Throwing out low vibrational thoughts to anyone, is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to keel over.

I know that you’re brimming with love, no-one who loves their dogs and hugs trees can be on a low vibration for long.

The next tree that you hug, pretend it’s someone you hate. The world will benefit, and you’ll benefit.

Carol, thanks for you comment. As I mentioned in my email, I got caught up in the lyrics and I don’t have a hateful bone in my body. Sometimes when I think about some of the injustice in the world, well, you know what I mean.
