Richard Dawkins and The Enemies of Reason

Last night terrestrial television broadcast an hour long programme which gave Professor Richard Dawkins a platform from which to expound his views on the British public becoming slaves to superstition. I watched in dis-belief!

This Oxford University Professor has written many books, which have now been translated into 31 different languages. His speciality is Evolutionary Biology, and he is currently being lauded as a ‘prophet’, a revolutionary thinker. He will be arriving on American shores very soon, hoping to sell more books, but most importantly to influence the way that the American people think.

Richard Dawkins believes that there is only one truth, and he has found it.

This man is sincere in his wish to save people from themselves, to educate them into his truth, not understanding that any truth is subjective, and that this depends on the conditioning that was received whilst growing up. We can choose, we can either carry on living as though we are thinking, while not having an original thought in our heads, or choose to modify our thinking. The modification will come about by reading and listening to original thinkers, and then weighing that input against what we know about society. If we are enlightened, then we learn to listen to our higher self, because history has given us all lessons in blindly believing what a charismatic leader tells us to believe.

In the 16th century the truth was a flat earth, in the 17th century the truth was that the earth was at the centre of the universe, these truths have been proven to be un-true, and so will many of the so called truths that Dawkins is claiming as irrefutable. Or does he believe that evolution of thought stops with him?

His quote: “Today the theory of evolution is about as much open to doubt as the theory that the earth goes round the sun,” would suggest that he believes that it does.

The television programme systematically de-bunked: Water Divining, Homeopathy, Mediumship, Astrology and what he called Faith Healing. Now I have trouble with Mediumship, having been witness to toe- curling exhibitions of contacting the dead, and not wishing to do it myself. I do not, however, consider that I have the authority to decry the need for anyone to want to do this, if they believe that this is their truth. But then I don’t have an alphabet soup of letters after my name, because this seems to be the criteria necessary to be called a ‘prophet’.

This total reliance on paper qualifications and science has brought us: Nuclear Weapons, Thalidomide babies, multi-drug resistant diseases and virulent cures that are worse than the dis-ease. What a legacy we leave to our children!
