Diana As Persecutor
In my previous post about Diana Princess of Wales, I wrote about her position as Victim on the Karpman Drama Triangle, in this post I will explore the Persecutor’s position.
You may believe that Diana was more persecuted than persecutor, and as outsiders we will never know, but what we do know, is that if you live your life following the model of the triangle, then all the positions of the triangle are your experience. Diana, Princess of Wales was no exception, as the playing out of her life demonstrates.
When You’re Born the Wrong Sex
Her first indiscretion was her sex, she should have been a boy. The blue clothes were waiting for her on July 1st 1961, not to be used until 3 years later when an heir to the Spencer Earldom was born.
If we all choose our birth family while in spirit, as Louise L. Hay and a growing number of spiritual thinkers believe is the case, why choose the female sex when a male was desperately longed for? There are going to be challenging situations, and a steep learning curve to face, which may become so painful that returning to spirit becomes a serious option.
Whatever the truth of this is, her parents would have been disappointed, and this would have reflected in their behaviour towards her.
Cruel Mind Games
There are no recorded instances of any overt cruelty, but there were times when Diana’s wishes for her future life were manipulated by school and family, these being well documented, for instance, her sport and dancing ambitions were thwarted by school and parents. The boarding school chosen by her father was meant to remove any ideas of dancing from her head. I rather think that it failed in this instance.
Discounted Dreams
No-one feels good when their wishes and beliefs about themselves are discounted, and it becomes fertile ground for stored anger. Along with the acrimonious divorce of her parents, acquiring a despised step-mother and being branded as thick, we have in Diana a volcano awaiting an eruption.
Diana dutifully allowed herself to be manipulated into marriage with The Prince of Wales, hoping that this would both please and appease her parents for past failures, and it might have worked if she had received the right kind of psychological help as soon as the stored anger started to erupt. For reasons unknown, this didn’t happen, and so she drifted into passive aggression which this photograph demonstrates. The Queen hated it!
The Damage Done by Charles
Prince Charles, a severely damaged character himself, was unable to cope with eating disorders and suicide attempts, feeling it unreasonable of her to expect fidelity from a Prince of Wales. He knew nothing of the desperate cries for help, he saw only a woman who was persecuting him by demanding a form of behaviour that he was unable to conform to. He branded her unstable.
The Loose Canon
By the standards of the Mountbatten-Windsors Diana had become a loose canon. The Windsors believed that whenever the inevitable family struggles and fights happened, they must remain private, they certainly didn’t wash their dirty linen in public, and both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip saw Diana as a threat to the monarchy. They were bemused by the adoration of Diana by the nation, and in some respects this saved Diana from being rejected more publicly.
The Worm Turns
Susie Orbach was invited into Diana’s private circle, a feminist psychoanalyst, with definite views on the role of women, and how they can take a different role in society. She taught Diana her worth, and not only as the mother of the two little princes, but as a woman in her own right. This new Diana did not go down well with the palace. She chose the most unglamorous charities to sponsor, she befriended stars of stage and screen, she took up dancing again, and all the while gaining a higher and higher profile with the British Public. Diana could do no wrong.
Let the Dancing Begin
Ill fated decisions brought the attention that she craved, she danced with John Travolta at a White House function and made a surprise appearance at the Royal Gala Performance at Covent Garden in 1985 dancing a routine to Uptown Girl with Wayne Sleep. Her husband and the rest of the royals were mortified, as she knew that they would be, but then the criticism was worth bearing because she had achieved her aims. Much more was to come.
Post Divorce
After a divorce played out on the public stage, she openly had affairs with dubious characters, most of whom couldn’t wait to write a kiss and tell account of their encounters. Then came the affair with Dodi Fayed, a very unsuitable alliance as far as the Windsors were concerned, but it gave her another chance to persecute her one-time family.
My Husband Wants to Kill Me
Whether she truly believed that Prince Charles wanted her killed, or it was a product of an over active imagination is speculation, but it is the basis of the long running saga, the ‘Diana Conspiracy’, still happening 10 years after her death.
Diana wrote a letter, which she gave to Paul Burrell, her trusted manservant which read:
This particular phase of my life is the most dangerous - my husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car, break failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry.
The Drama Goes On
It is my opinion that the monarchy have weathered the storm, the royal soap opera is still running, and the Queen has metamorphosed into the role that her mother played, that of a sweet old granny. Except, just once in a while the camera glimpses the real character behind the crown.
