The Nose as THE Pathway

breathing.jpgThe direct route to your brain and also the doorway to consciousness is your nose. It is the pathway for prana (life force) which comes into your body through your breath.

Healthy breathing gives proper flow of prana throughout your head and body. When excess body fluids accumulate in your sinus, throat, nose or head; eliminating them through your nose is best.

Oiling Your Nose

Applying herbal medicated oils (Nasya) to the nasal passages is an ancient Ayurvedic practice for prevention and healing of imbalances. In Ayurveda, Nasya is recommended for:

  • Insomnia (provides direct calming to the mind)
  • Allergies
  • Snoring (sleep apnea)
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Anxiety /Spaciness (feeling of being ungrounded /vertigo)
  • Fatigue

Protecting Your Health

Nasya Oil is for anyone suffering from diseases of the upper respiratory system and sinuses. It soothes, protects the nasal passages and helps relieve sinus congestion. Nasya can pacify sneezing and relax irritated or inflamed nasal passages.

Daily nasal lubrication also helps to release tension in your head and relieve accumulated stress. Nasya increases health and resistance to disease by keeping your nasal membranes moist. Dry heat, air conditioning or living in arid areas dry your membranes. Nasya replenishes and protects your delicate mucous membranes.

Helping With Stress

herbalist1.jpgNasya is good for those with mental stress, especially anxiety and worry. Brahmi, Bhringaraj and Calamus are herbs that have ancient origins in Ayurvedic herbal medicine. They are renowned for their ability to help increase a sense of being centered, collected and calm in oneself. Yogis have used Nasya to deepen their meditation and to help with drying of the nasal passages from prolonged Pranayama (breathing) practices.

How to Use Nasya Oil

  • 2-6 drops to each nostril. Start with the minimum amount and build up to the amount that feels right for you.
  • Have some tissues handy.
  • You can tilt the head back or lay down.
  • Block off one nostril and apply oil to the open nostril. Focus a couple of breathes to draw the oil into that nostril. Repeat on the other side.
  • Massage the sides of your nose.
  • Allow a few minutes to let the oil to penetrate.
  • Use daily, or as often as needed.

Nasya is particularly good paired with use of the Netti Pot. This small Aladin looking pot cleanses and clears the nasal cavities of toxins, viruses, pollutants and excess mucous.
