Today was my weigh in… I needed a starting point, after a vacation where I let go of my healthy eating habits. Although I’ve been choosing more whole foods, drinking copious amounts of water, and eating every few hours to boost my metabolism (which means 5 0r 6 small meals a day) I’m still […]

Winning at Weight Loss

O.k. I admit it I’ve been watching Fat March. Why? Well to me it’s inspiring that this group of very overweight Americans have made it this far in their journey from Boston to Washington D.C. and yes it’s television but the last contestant that was voted off made a really good point. If he could […]

Eating Local and Seasonally-24 Boxes

One of the reasons I love Mediterranean food so much is that it’s all about eating seasonally. The daily trip to the market dictates what’s for dinner. Maybe this isn’t practical anymore in our modern culture but whenever possible I shop at farmer’s markets and eat from the garden. Last night was fresh beets cooked […]

More reasons to live the Mediterranean diet

I just ran across a very good blog promoting the Mediterranean diet. I, of course was interested. I own and run a Mediterranean restaurant, try to eat the Mediterranean diet 90% of the time and personally think it’s the healthiest diet in the world. The latest post refers to the study where children “liked” the […]

Tofu-Vegetable Stirfry

As a chef, I can cook many cuisines very well. Except for Asian. One of my first cooking disasters was a stir-fry for my husband. It was inedible. We ordered takeout.
I understand the concept very well, I have read a lot about it but I don’t have the ease and comfort that I have when […]

In Crescent […]

Healthy Burgers

One of my favorite foods year-round is a thick grilled burger topped with melted Swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. And although I occasionally eat this favorite just the way it is, more often I choose a healthier burger. Over the last ten years, the vegetable burger business has evolved with exciting new flavors including black-bean […]

Eating Whole Foods -Mediterranean Marinated Olives

Yesterday, I had a meal at a restaurant that exemplified the way I like to eat. Simple ingredients, whole foods, and rich flavors without a lot of unnecessary calories. Choosing a Melon- Minty Melon Salad

At the farmers’ market it’s easy to find a ripe melon. The vendor offers samples and will usually choose one for you. But when you’re faced with a pile of melons at the supermarket, how do you know which one’s ripe? Follow your nose and use your senses.
Look for bruises, pits and soft spots. If […]

Eat More Veggies-Farmers Market Gazpacho

In the summer, it’s easier to eat more fruits and vegetables. Melons, cherries, corn, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted chile peppers, peaches and more fill the local farmers markets and supermarkets with their fresh aromas and bright colors.
My doctor recently said to me “I’ve never met anyone who got fat because they ate too […]
